Arrowhead Game Studios game director Mikael Eriksson has published a lengthy community post addressing two of the most common criticisms levelled at Helldivers 2 - the opacity of the Galactic War and the thinness of long-term player progression. The announcement, posted on 4 June 2026, sets out a tiered roadmap that begins this month and stretches well into the future.
Two Problems, Two Tracks
Eriksson framed the studio's thinking around two distinct categories: Community Progression - covering contributions to the Galactic War effort - and Player Progression, which focuses on an individual helldiver's personal journey.
On the community side, Eriksson acknowledged that simply raising the level cap is not enough to address player feedback on a foundational level - decisions like that only start making sense once deeper progression systems are actually in place.
Galactic War Campaigns - Live in June
The most immediate change is the introduction of Galactic War Campaigns, which Arrowhead describes as the next evolution of Major Orders. These structured 1-to-3-week campaigns replace the existing Major Orders system with clearer goals, visible outcomes, and guaranteed rewards for players who contribute.
The studio's stated goal is to make player involvement in the Galactic War more transparent, so the outcomes of contributions - and the reasons for them - are easier to understand.
Rewards are also getting an overhaul. At least one Campaign reward will always be available as long as its conditions are met, and Eriksson explained that the studio wants to experiment with different kinds of rewards - from gameplay-altering effects to cool items - because "players should earn more than just medals." The first campaign reward is a new Fast Reconnaissance Vehicle, earned by taking part in the campaign and achieving its goals.
Planet Warfronts - A Roguelite Mode in Development
Looking further ahead, Eriksson revealed that Arrowhead has been experimenting with a new style of missions called Planet Warfronts, which will use roguelite gameplay systems to give players more options when liberating planets.
There will be three distinct mission types within Planet Warfronts: "Defend" missions in liberated territory, "Frontline War" missions on the frontlines, and "Behind Enemy Lines" missions in enemy-controlled territories. These dynamic battles for key strategic locations are something Arrowhead experimented with early on, but the studio decided it did not yet have the content needed to do them justice.
| Mission Type | Territory | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Defend | Liberated | Hold key positions |
| Frontline War | Front lines | Active combat push |
| Behind Enemy Lines | Enemy-controlled | High-risk infiltration |
Planet Warfronts does not yet have a release date.

Personal Progression and New Ships
On the player side, Eriksson acknowledged that Personal Orders often feel at odds with the goals of either a squad or the community. The system is being transformed into "Personal Campaign Progression" - a specific track that will arrive alongside each Galactic War Campaign, though it will not be ready for this month's launch.
Super Destroyers are also in line for a significant update. The existing Super Destroyer has been the only ship in the game since launch, and Arrowhead acknowledged that the current ship module system does not live up to its potential and lacks player agency. The overhaul will add more agency and significantly expand what players can unlock and customize.
Beyond that, a dedicated ship team has been working on the first alternative ship, with Eriksson stating that "each new ship will have its own unique progression paths, specializations, and customizations" - and more will follow. Further details are expected "later this year."
Near-Term and Long-Term Fixes
Upcoming updates will also include the ability to use assisted reload as long as either the carrier or the reloader has the right backpack, double the number of emote slots, and reduced dead inputs on stimming.
Longer-term, Arrowhead wants to address Stratagem bouncing, Hellpod steering, improved traversal for players and enemies, a level cap increase to 300, economy and resource improvements, fixes to Warbond and Superstore menus, and stability and balance improvements.
