After years of near-silence, Undead Labs and publisher Xbox Game Studios pulled back the curtain on State of Decay 3 at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 on June 7. The studio delivered the game's first real gameplay trailer and locked in a 2027 release window across Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam, and - in a notable series first - PlayStation 5.
Six Years in the Making
The title was first announced back in 2020, though few concrete details about the project had emerged since. Studio head Philip Holt had previously revealed that when the original announcement trailer was released, the game existed largely as a Word document - "So that trailer - there really wasn't a game or game team when we were working on that trailer," he explained. The trailer itself was pre-rendered, created by Blur, and was meant to show the studio's vision. In 2024, State of Decay 3 had a re-reveal with a new story trailer, but fans faced another long wait before alpha playtests were announced earlier this year.
What the Gameplay Trailer Shows
The Xbox Games Showcase 2026 delivered the first-ever look at gameplay for State of Decay 3, with the trailer showing open world exploration, multiplayer, settlement building, weapon crafting, and zombie slaying. The footage moves from scenic rural environments to explosive combat and co-op settlement creation. Players can drive vehicles through zombie crowds, team up to take out grotesque nests, and hack and blast their way through undead hordes. Unconventional zombie types also appear, including large-bellied fire-breathers and huge, writhing nests.
Creative Director Kevin Patzelt confirmed that everything shown in the trailer is from the game - "We did not use CGI," he stated, adding that it is 100% game capture.
Core Systems and New Features
In State of Decay 3, players will construct settlements, maintain a community of survivors, and battle back against an encroaching zombie threat - with support for solo play or shared world co-op for up to four players - all within a massive open world survival sandbox.

Creative Director Kevin Patzelt confirmed that State of Decay 3 features a map four times larger than a single State of Decay 2 map, introduces a shared-world multiplayer system, and adds dynamic Plague Nests designed to make every playthrough feel different.
Plague Nests are new to State of Decay 3, described as "really tough, dungeon-like areas" that represent an evolving threat. The zombie threat has also evolved since State of Decay 2, with zombies now hunting together rather than behaving in a disorganised and passive manner.
The game is being built in Unreal Engine 5, with the studio targeting a higher quality bar for the moment-to-moment experience than anything it has previously achieved.
Platforms, Game Pass, and the PS5 Question
State of Decay 3 is officially targeting a 2027 launch and will release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, cloud, and day one on Game Pass. Xbox Play Anywhere support is also included, allowing players to access it on both console and PC at no additional cost.
The PS5 launch marks a meaningful shift for the franchise. It reflects a broader Xbox approach of deciding exclusivity on a game-by-game basis, with State of Decay 3 being one of the titles that will not be a console exclusive.

Patzelt confirmed the studio is already running an Alpha version of the game with players, and plans to expand the Alpha and Beta lists over time, noting strong appetite from the community for sign-ups.
