Ninja Theory pulled off one of the biggest surprises at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 by unveiling Senua, the third entry in the Hellblade series. Simply titled Senua rather than Hellblade III, the game is a full action-adventure targeting a 2027 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
Not Hellblade III - A Different Kind of Game
The deliberate name change signals intent. Speaking to Xbox Wire, Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews said "The title of just Senua really reflects that this is something fresh and new and different. It is a different style of game." Rather than a numbered sequel, the studio positions Senua as an evolution: the intimate storytelling and cinematic presentation of the Hellblade series remain, but the scope expands significantly into combat depth, puzzle-solving, and open exploration.
The story picks up after both previous games. Senua, the Celtic warrior whose journey through psychosis defined the series, is now trapped between life and death in a fractured vision of purgatory - modelled after her childhood homeland - and must battle to reach the afterlife and reunite with those she has lost.
Bigger Combat, Bigger World
The most dramatic shift is in gameplay ambition. Where the Hellblade games leaned on intense, often one-versus-one cinematic combat, Senua throws multiple enemies into the mix at once. The announce trailer, described by Ninja Theory as footage from an early pre-release build running on Unreal Engine 5, shows Senua wielding a short axe, dual-wielding weapons, throwing them at enemies, and using stealth to isolate targets before combat begins.
Matthews describes the design philosophy as "tactical choice" - players can choose how to engage every encounter, or even whether to engage at all. The studio is also clear that this is not a combat-heavy title: the game aims for a roughly even split between combat, traversal, and puzzle-solving.
Senua also introduces Focus Abilities - powers tied to Senua's evolving beliefs that can shatter reality, open new spaces in the world, and serve as crowd-control tools in battle. These abilities function across all three gameplay pillars, making them a core part of how players interact with the world rather than isolated special moves.

The world itself is substantially larger. Matthews confirmed the map is roughly twice the size of Hellblade II's, though it remains a single interconnected map rather than an open world. The studio describes it as a linear story told through interconnected locations, designed to reward exploration and player curiosity.
All Hands on Deck - and Project Mara Shelved
The announcement carries a significant behind-the-scenes story. For the first time in over 12 years - since the development of DmC: Devil May Cry - Ninja Theory has brought its entire 85-person team together on one project. That unity came at a cost: Matthews confirmed that Project Mara, the studio's long-announced experimental horror title, has been cancelled to allow full focus on Senua.
Matthews noted the studio's history with action-adventure - Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC - gives the team the expertise needed to deliver on the expanded scope. Development began in September 2024, just months after Senua's Saga: Hellblade II shipped in May 2024.
