Santa Monica Studio has effectively pinned God of War Laufey to a 2027 release window without ever stating a specific date - by confirming the game will ship on disc.
"We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc," the studio stated on social media, and with Sony ending production of discs for any game launching in January 2028 or later, that means the spin-off will have to launch before then.

The comments section of Santa Monica's SDCC panel announcement on X filled almost immediately with fans demanding to know whether Laufey would get a physical release, and the studio responded with the disc confirmation just an hour after the panel post went live. Members of the cast will appear alongside Game Director Ariel Lawrence, with Head of Creative Cory Barlog moderating the SDCC panel. The panel is scheduled for July 24, 2026 at San Diego Comic-Con, and will dig into development details and the performance capture behind the characters.
The disc confirmation effectively marks God of War Laufey as a 2027 game, even if PlayStation and Santa Monica have largely skirted the subject - any new game released after January 2028 will not have a disc, giving Santa Monica a hard deadline.
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has previously reported that God of War Laufey is targeting a launch around February or March 2027, and the physical disc confirmation lines up exactly with that window. Insider Nate the Hate has separately revealed that Santa Monica Studio has been targeting the first half of 2027, though he noted that target may have shifted since he first reported it.

What God of War Laufey actually is
God of War Laufey was revealed during the State of Play showcase for Summer Game Fest, branching off from the opening moments of the 2018 God of War at the point that Kratos cremates his deceased wife. During PlayStation's State of Play on June 2, 2026, Sony revealed God of War Laufey with a 20-minute gameplay trailer.
Cory Barlog confirmed the game is not a prequel - it starts at the same moment as the 2018 game and runs as a parallel story to both God of War (2018) and Ragnarรถk, following Faye's journey in the Everywhen while Kratos and Atreus travel the Nine Realms.
Faye, aka Laufey the Just (portrayed once more by Deborah Ann Woll) wakes up in a different realm - the Everywhen, an afterlife for gods of all religions. She quickly comes face-to-face with Sekhmet from the Egyptian pantheon and Begtse, the god of war from Tibetan mythology, who have her thrown into captivity. There she meets Jack Quaid voicing the gelatinous cube companion Phranque, and Perlina Lau voicing Rue, the ribbons of a sentient sword. Chris Judge also returns and will appear at the SDCC panel.
This will be the first game in the series where Kratos is not the main playable character.

The bigger picture: physical media pressure
PlayStation recently announced it was ending the production of physical discs in January 2028 and setting up the PlayStation 6 console to be digital-only - a move that generated significant backlash from fans. For fans who have built a physical God of War collection across the Greek and Norse sagas, Laufey is likely the final chapter that can actually sit on a shelf.
Unlike most recent posts from a PlayStation-adjacent account, the comments section on Santa Monica's disc confirmation was generally filled with praise.
God of War Laufey is available to pre-order now from AU$62.94 - check the table above for the best price across all verified key sellers.
An official release date still has not been announced, but early-to-mid 2027 remains the most logical target, giving the game breathing room while still comfortably clearing the January 2028 physical deadline. Gamescom 2026 in August is widely expected to be the next opportunity for Santa Monica to show its hand.
