If you're into this type of video games, you will enjoy it a lot. Tormented Souls has a lot of great things that make it into a enjoyable experience with a few negative aspects. The negative:1. The game has a lot of backtracking and loadscreens: If you play it on the Switch version, you will notice that depending on the room you go to, the loading screens can be long. Something we didn't necessarily like about the games of the era the title is inspired by.2. In addition to the above, there are scenes and parts in the game that demand a lot to the console and cause lag, the optimization of the Switch version is not the best, but still playable.3. Later in the game, the music becomes a bit repetitive, there is not much soundtrack in the game. What makes the game excellent:The map design of the entire mansion is exquisite, replete with details that make exploring the game a real pleasure. The design of the enemies and puzzles is no slouch either. The art direction of the game as well as its story is what makes the game an experience not to be missed if you like the survival horror genre.Despite the negative details, the game manages to stand out on its own and becomes a must-play survival horror.

Tormented Souls is a great option for survival horror fans, especially for those who love the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill games. Despite a few technical hiccups, it's a 10-hour adventure that will keep you with your eyes wide open and your heart beating fast until the end.

Tormented Souls is a fabulous return to classic survival horror, the likes of which haven’t been seen for years. Even horror novices will gel with it because it updates the genre just enough to be accessible in 2022.
Aside from the changes to the feel and efficiency with the cursor controls and some stuttering cutscenes, Tormented Souls remains one of the few successful attempts at recreating that late 90s survival horror vibe. Cinematic camera movements and a beautiful but eerie atmosphere (not to mention nightmarish monsters) lends some scariness to the game, while terrible voice acting and a strangely bare plot leaves players with more questions than answers by the time the game is over. It would seem the best and most authentic way to play Tormented Souls would be on Playstation 4, Xbox One, or PC. The very slight graphical improvements on a smaller mobile screen don’t take away the benefits of playing on other consoles.
Tormented Souls is a great survival horror game, and on Switch it’s more impressive than ever. The visuals are good, the puzzle-heavy gameplay remains engaging, and being able to quickly bring up the map makes a world of difference. If you’re an old-school survival horror fan and haven’t played this yet, get it bought, pronto.
Tormented Souls is a fine addition to the survival horror genre, the influence it takes from Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark is evident, and this only adds to the creepy experience.
Tormented Souls is a true homage to the survival horror classics of the ‘90s. It’s sold as a modernisation of the genre, but really, it’s the opposite: a game that resists the allure of polish and convenience, and instead commits to the clunky, unwelcoming design—deliberately—that makes those classics tick. That approach won’t appeal to everyone, and the balance isn’t always spot on, but when it comes to dredging up some creepy atmosphere and instilling a constant sense of tension and unease in the player, Tormented Souls hits the mark.
Although Tormented Souls is a commendable homage to classic survival horror games, its focus on the past is unfortunately its biggest downfall.

It uses the same cameraTormented Souls is a real nod back to the old survival horror days (Resident Evil / Silent Hill / Alone in the Dark). It uses the same camera as RE: Code Veronica in that it's a mixture between fixed point camera angles and a moving/panning camera to match your movement. The voice acting is a little cheesy but again, i think that's a nod back to Res Evil 1. Graphics are perfectly fine. The gameplay is proper old school. You save by finding tape. You then have to find a recorder. Similar to the ink ribbon/type writer system on Res Evil. The tapes are in short supply though so you have to be mindful of when you save. Whilst i have had to (annoyingly) replay an hour of gameplay again due to dying, this really adds to the tension as you need to make the decision whether to save, or try to go a bit deeper in before saving. You can use the left thumb stick to move (normal/modern) or use the D pad for tank controls (my preference). Puzzles were plentiful and whilst i'd say they were harder than the early RE games, they weren't too taxing. Item management is back. However, whilst it works very similar to the early RE games, items are split into groups for easy management and also there is no limit on how much you can carry.Once enemies are dead, they stay dead. Their bodies even stay in the place you killed them which is a neat little touch. This makes exploring easier and allows you to make "safe routes" between key areas. The darkness kills you. So if there is no external light source, you need to use your lighter to survive. This does become problematic when there are enemies as you can't equip the lighter and a weapon at the same time.Physical version comes with a map of the Hospital and Mansion too which was a nice touch. i loved this game but i did grow up on the old survival horror games back when they were hard. This won't be a walk in the park for those who like to have a regular auto save and hint system. And if you misjudge saving/not saving, you could have an hour of gameplay to replay. But that's what survival horror is all about.
Tormented Souls takes us back to classic survival horror. However its playable issues prevent it of becoming an enjoyable and perfect horror experience.
Resident Evil 2 Remake shows how to properly blend old-school horror ideas with modern action to create a great game. Tormented Souls ignored all that and tried to copy the original one-to-one, with predictable result: it’s a bland clone of a game two decades old.

Tormented Souls is a survival horror in the style of classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill games, that manages to have an interesting plot and good puzzles, while giving you a very fun time.

The fixed camera can be annoying, in some cases your character woud clearly see an enemy, but "you" dont see it, so the game doesnt act like its there, it just breaks immersion for me. The real **** is the resource based saving though, i never liked it, what the fking point in an adventure game?? There are no skill based action mechanics, its not hard or fulfilling to play a part again, its just a chore...Right now my game crashed and I d have to play a good part over again, i think I rather go watch a playtrough...On the bright side good atmosphere and some decent puzzles (nothing like silent hill), but its very much worth it for the price. WIth an over the shoulder camera and normal saving it d be a 9 for me.

Tormented Souls will be loved by fans of the old-school survival horrors. It's almost a homage to them, delivering a fun narrative with some great puzzles along the way. It's whether or not you can handle the fixed camera, limited saves, and clunky combat that will decide how long you can stick with it all for.

Tormented Souls is a love letter and throwback to the old school survival horror games, warts and all, even including the age-old tank controls found in the games it looks to emulate. Honestly, it does a good job in this, setting the atmosphere, ramping up the stakes and only rarely venturing into the absurd when it comes to puzzle logic. While not completely innocent, with some nonsense puzzles, and a questionable art style for the protagonist, there's enough on offer to keep you going and it makes it more than worth the reasonable price of the game.
Admittedly, it is refreshing to see this classic style of game brought back to modern consoles, and some players may even appreciate the way this feels like an at-times-terrifying ’90s throwback. But even if you can look past its unoriginality, the lack of polish in stiff voice acting, character animation, and numerous bugs break the immersion. Retro revivals are cool, but if a game brings nothing new to the table and ends up worse than the existing ones it’ll inevitably be compared to, you may as well just dust off the old PlayStation and play those instead.
It’s hard to hold any of Tormented Souls’s flaws against the game since so many of them are by design. It’s very strict adherence to the classics of survival horror means you have a game that can easily frustrate, but also captivates with its struggle for survival like very few horror titles do these days. The story is cheese and the difficulty can feel arbitrary when we have to replay entire chapters of the game after dying to a hidden trap, just because the game refuses to include checkpoints. This is, however, a game that survival-horror fans have wanted for many years and it shows that fixed camera angles and limited saves can make for an incredibly intense horror experience even today.
Tormented Souls pays homage to old school gems like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, without adding something new to the formula. If you are a nostalgic of the nineties golden era, you are gonna appreciate it.

Puzzles are great and really makes your brain work. Fixed camera and tape is good old solution to make game more scary. There are not many resources (ammo and med-kits), so you should use it very careful. It takes 12-15 hours to complete story.10/10 the best old school horror since first RE.
Overall, if you want a game that brings back the type of horror that seems to have become lost to time in recent years, Tormented Souls will definitely provide. It’s creepy, it’s dark and it has an enjoyable story within its moody setting. Sure, it essentially rips off the features of the classic experiences, but it also feels like a fresh new experience thanks to a surprisingly enjoyable story that holds its own. If you’re missing an experience that properly gave you a thrill, then Tormented Souls should be able to reintroduce that excitement in your life.
A very classic survival horror, tailor-made for the most nostalgic gamers, with a creepy and well-made atmosphere, but a far too clunky gameplay.

Tormented Souls is a good first step for Dual Effect in the world of survival horror: their tribute to the 90s is clear without falling into plagiarism, the puzzles are well thought out, but the game needs a few more touches to make the experience less rigid.

Under its broke survival horror airs, Tormented Souls is much more solid than it looks, not least thanks to its very controlled production and atmosphere. It is with great pleasure that we walk through the corridors of a very mysterious manor, until we find ourselves faced with puzzlingly difficult puzzles, further weighed down by a map that is sorely lacking in information. The thrill of discovery then turns into a frustrating stroll, especially during a second part which requires going through most of the rooms already visited. Other flaws (animations, inventory) add to the overall weight even more, without overwhelming it. So we end up with a nice tribute to Resident Evil and Silent Hill of the time, but not especially in the face of an unmissable survival horror. To try anyway.
Tormented Souls is the successor to classic survival horror. I’ve wanted a new Silent Hill (or classic Resident Evil) game for years, but I’d trade all the drama and disappointment for a fantastic spiritual successor like this any day. Exploring Winterlake Hospital channeled all those feelings of dread and loneliness that made those games special and proves that the format still works. The biggest issues with Tormented Souls seem like they stem more from a problem with budget more than the devs’ ability. With indie games, there are always compromises that have to be made to launch a title, and I think Dual Effect struck the best balance it could here.
Tormented Souls gets way more right than not, and I came away from it very impressed. This was the kind of game that once I got the hang of it (I have not played many survival horror games at all) I became enthralled with playing and exploring every area and uncovering all the secrets and story material I could. This game does not try to advance the genre; it doesn’t do anything particularly new or better than previous champions of the genre have, but for all that it does, it does it very well. I’ll always say there is room in any genre for another solid entry, and that’s what you get here — a great survival horror game built with intentional classic/retro design.

Not sure I'd recommend this to anyone who's never played a game with fixed camera, but the price is fair, so it's your gamble. As a big fan of the genre, I love Tormented Souls. Sure, the story could be better told, and the combat a little less awkward, but the atmosphere, puzzles and general design deliver exactly what it promises. No game of this style has impressed me like this since the original REs and SHs. While I understand some users might not enjoy this, for the critic of Playstation Lifestyle to give it a 55 is baffling. That's the kind of faux pas equal to an art critic walking into a Jackson Pollock exhibit and asking why everything looks so messy. This game continues a specific tradition, and such ignorance of its history from a critic is unforgivable.
Tormented Souls is a great tribute to the old school survival horror genre. The Chilean studio, Dual Effect Games, demonstrates great mastery and knowledge of the elements that made horror games great back in the day. Although graphically it is not very impressive and the presentation is kind of cheesy, the setting, the atmosphere and the monsters are so well designed that the resulting experience is particularly immersive. Tormented Souls strengths definitely outweigh its weaknesses. If you are looking for a typical horror experience from the late 90s and early 2000s, Tormented Souls is a must.
The average gamer might want to think twice before picking Tormented Souls up, as mechanically it feels outdated and often rather unwelcoming. The lousy voice acting and unconvincing character models will provide further reason for them to throw in the towel early, too. However, if you’re a fan of old-fashioned survival horrors and find yourself yearning for one that offers a modern lick of paint and a new setting, there’s a very high chance you’ll absolutely love it. It’s not as good as the classics of the genre, but developers Dual Effect and Abstract Digital have delivered something that is hot on their heels.

If you love classic survival horror titles, Tormented Souls needs to be on your radar. It’s a terrifically terrifying love letter to Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark. With brilliant puzzles, a genuinely scary setting to explore, and unsettling monsters to face, it’s the kind of game that will shock you to your core and stick with you long after the credits roll. While it undoubtedly wears its old-school inspiration on its bloodied sleeve, make no mistake: Tormented Souls is a modern survival horror masterpiece.
