The world is on the brink of cataclysm, and you, the chosen one, will walk the path of light and save everything. I'm not one for spoilers, so I won't dive any deeper than that into the story. That story is deep and not given to you in any linear order, as the point to all of this is to reveal this past, and put the pieces together. If you've played puzzle adventures you've encountered that guide the beam of light with mirrors puzzle. That puzzle is the heart of this game and runs from fairly simple to mind-melting puzzles. there are 6 worlds to conquer if you include the Ring of Initiation, the games tutorial levels, each world increasing in difficulty. Some stages have a secondary puzzle, The Stone Keys which once activated stay activated, so you can complete the main puzzle. These open up special hidden stages, these stages are also crazy hard challenges without hints. Around each stage are the Cryptoglyphs, which unlock story bits, and descriptions of the various items on the levels, and Cells that give you a hint you can check on the board. The game is relaxing and slow-paced, allowing you all the time you need to figure out the puzzles despite the urgent nature of the ongoing story of apocalypse. If you want a new puzzle that will make you think then Archaica is something you should look into.
Archaica: The Path of Light on Xbox One is by no means an original puzzle game – light bending is up there in terms of repeat usage with the pipe construction mechanic for minigames – but what it brings is a challenging example of light manipulation that differentiates from others. The hint system helps massively and means that Archaica doesn’t gatekeep for players that would perhaps struggle.
All in all then, I had a really great time with Archaica: The Path of Light. The puzzle difficulty is pitched just right, it allows us to solve puzzles at our own pace and it has a brilliantly executed hint system that still encourages thinking about a solution rather than just giving us the answer. Some minor control issues aside, I’d highly recommend picking this up, especially if you’re after something to unwind with after a long day.
