Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Switch 2 Review - Best Version Yet

Monolith Soft's Switch 2 upgrade delivers 4K/60fps, a brand-new racing mode, and a traversal vehicle - setting the bar for the two Xenoblade upgrades still to come.

Monolith Soft and Nintendo have pushed Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition onto yet another platform, this time with the full weight of Switch 2 hardware behind it. The result, according to early reviews, is the most accomplished version of the 2010 Wii JRPG to date - a meaningful step up from the already well-regarded 2020 Definitive Edition rather than a simple resolution bump.

Visual and Performance Upgrades

The most immediate change is the jump to 60fps and an upscaled 4K resolution in TV mode, with full HD in handheld. The original Definitive Edition on Switch was known for a blurry presentation - Xenoblade Chronicles 3 introduced temporal upscaling to the engine, but the first game never received that treatment. TheSixthAxis notes the new version arrives with "much better image quality both docked and handheld," and highlights a draw distance that stretches far into the background alongside noticeably crisper textures.

The performance comparison with Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition - Switch 2 Edition is hard to avoid. That earlier upgrade, which launched in February 2026, drew criticism for smeary, unstable image quality. RPG Site noted that the Chronicles DE Switch 2 Edition "uses similar upscaling... but the end result is not as severe." TheSixthAxis agrees the Chronicles upgrade "comes across much better," adding pointedly that the Chronicles X issues have not been addressed with a patch.

New Content: Ether Jet and Nopon Grand Prix

Beyond the visual work, Monolith Soft has added fresh gameplay content - something the Chronicles X Switch 2 upgrade did not offer. The headline addition is the Ether Jet, a high-speed vehicle that dramatically cuts travel time across the game's massive open areas. A new quest unlocks it via a Nopon Engineer NPC at the Bionis' Leg Refugee Camp, accessible from Chapter 4 onward. The introductory fetch run back to Tephra Cave is brief - fast travel keeps it from being a chore - and the payoff is genuine: the Ether Jet makes Xenoblade's sprawling landscapes feel far more navigable.

Unlocking the Ether Jet also opens up the Nopon Grand Prix, a kart-racing mini-game with Score Attack and Battle Race modes, multiple tracks that unlock as you progress through the story, and prizes including the new gear sets mentioned in Nintendo's marketing. Each party member carries individual racing stats, and the mode is reportedly more substantial than it looks on paper.

A minor note for navigation: the Nopon Grand Prix is accessed from the in-game menu by pressing Y, a detail the game does not clearly advertise.

Verdict

TheSixthAxis concludes that Monolith Soft "have actually put some thought and effort" into this upgrade - a direct contrast to the Chronicles X release - and that at its upgrade price it "feels like a reasonable asking price." After the disappointment that surrounded the Chronicles X Switch 2 Edition, this release sets a more promising benchmark for the two remaining Xenoblade upgrades. If those follow the same template of genuine new content alongside the expected performance gains, the full trilogy re-release could end up being one of Switch 2's stronger software stories in 2026.
