Developer Digital Extremes pulled back the curtain on Warframe's most anticipated update ever at TennoCon 2026 in London, Ontario on July 12. The long-teased Tau update - years in the making - is arriving as a free addition on all platforms in late 2026, and it looks like nothing fans could have predicted.

Previous story beats had teased Tau as a gleaming civilisation of Sentients and humans living in harmony. The reality shown at TennoCon is the opposite. Tau arrives as a second star chart - not a replacement for the Origin System - opening with the Sentient ring city of Fornax and at least one additional unrevealed location. Fornax is depicted as a living metropolis rotting in style: constant black rain, an addictive substance called Bloom, and a criminal underworld of casinos, docks, and slums answering to the Hunra.
The Hunra, voiced by Jonathan Bullock (Dynasty Warriors: Origins), is a ruthless crime boss who rules the city through the production of Bloom and a deadly network of smugglers and enforcers. Warframe Creative Director Rebecca Ford was direct about the update's thematic core at a press preview event: "Addiction is the theme of this update."

Meet Brysko, the Chimeraframe
The Tau chapter introduces Brysko, a Chimera Warframe - specifically engineered by Albrecht Entrati to serve as a trusted infiltration unit inside the Hunra's criminal circle ahead of the Tenno's arrival. Brysko is silent to the outside world but has a full inner monologue voiced by Matthew Mercer - famed for his work in The Legend of Vox Machina and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - marking the actor's first work in the Warframe universe.
Brysko is the 67th unique Warframe, with a detective theme and abilities that include throwing a suite of cards that strike affected enemies with a jolt of thunder. His abilities also include a pistol called the Corecracker that leaves auto-targeting orbs upon killing enemies, and he will ship with a hound companion that was not shown during the demo.
A Second Star Chart, Not a Replacement
Ford moved quickly to reassure the community that Tau does not mean abandoning the Origin System. Developers directly addressed concerns that Warframe is abandoning its existing setting, confirming that deep new story beats for the Origin System are still planned, and emphasising they intend to keep "both worlds alive" rather than treating Tau as a full replacement for existing content.
Warframe's next major Narrative Chapter sends the Tenno to an entirely new Star Chart called the Tau System, marking the first time the game has expanded beyond its long-running Origin System setting. The chapter launches free on all platforms later this year, with the initial release centred on Fornax and at least one additional unrevealed location.
At launch, the update will open with two explorable regions, with further planets - at least three others visible orbiting Tau's binary suns in the demo - to be fleshed out in future content drops.
Gameplay: Familiar, But Expanded
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| New enemy faction | Fornax Drowners (Sentient sub-type) |
| New Warframe | Brysko (Chimeraframe, #67) |
| New traversal | Grappling hook mechanic |
| Endgame difficulty | Replaces Steel Path in Tau |
| New minigame | Portau card game |
Fornax introduces a distinct new Sentient enemy faction called the Fornax Drowners, described as Sentients that have evolved differently from those players have fought in the Origin System. The demo also showcased new guns, a grappling hook traversal mechanic, and a boss fight against a pair of Sentient twins who can merge into a single large monster.
Also revealed was Warframe's first-ever card minigame, Portau, built on poker mechanics but reworked with Sentient-themed suits called Blooms, Cores, Moons, and Suns. Ford compared the casino setting directly to Final Fantasy VII's Gold Saucer. Ford also teased at least one new mission mode with "a twist on the core Warframe mission structure, to make it feel more fresh."
Before Tau: Iceblade of Narin This Fall
The Fall 2026 update has been named Iceblade of Narin, and before players venture beyond the Origin System to Tau, it will introduce the 66th Warframe, two new Deluxe Collections, a highly-anticipated rework, and the next Prime Access release.
Iceblade of Narin carries the 66th Warframe - a female ice frame ending Frost's 13-year monopoly on the cold element - plus the confirmed Banshee rework and Banshee Deluxe, a gargoyle-themed Qorvex Deluxe, and Citrine Prime Access. Further details on Iceblade of Narin will be revealed at the next Devstream on September 4.
