PUBG Studios has revealed a new Interactive Smoke system coming to PUBG: Battlegrounds, and it fundamentally changes how one of the battle royale's most relied-upon tools actually works.
Described by the developer as the biggest addition in its 2026 roadmap, the feature means smoke grenades will no longer act as a static wall blocking line of sight - they will now behave as a physical entity that sways in the wind and can be dispersed by explosions.
How Interactive Smoke Changes the Game
Explosions, vehicles, and other battlefield chaos can push smoke around or temporarily clear sections of it, creating gaps where previously there would have been safe cover. That is a significant shift for a game where smoke has historically been treated as a reliable, predictable shield.
The feature was first outlined in PUBG's 2026 roadmap, where the developer described Interactive Smoke as one of the headline in-game additions planned for the year - the idea being to make smoke grenades behave more like physical objects in the world, rather than static visual blockers.
PUBG Studios also published a dedicated showcase video for the feature, with the official description noting that "vehicles, explosions, and more can now displace smoke, creating new opportunities - and new risks - on the Battlegrounds."

Tactical Implications
The practical impact stretches across every stage of a match. Smoke has long been the go-to tool for reviving downed teammates in open ground, crossing exposed bridges, and breaking line of sight in late-game circles. With the new system, none of those uses are guaranteed to hold.
Attacking teams now have an active countermeasure: instead of waiting out a smoke screen or firing blindly into it, a well-placed grenade or a vehicle push can physically open visibility and force opponents to reposition. Defenders, meanwhile, will need to think harder about where they deploy smoke and what nearby activity might compromise it.
Interactive Smoke will behave as a physical entity influenced by environmental factors such as wind and explosions, introducing new tactical depth in combat - a description that applies equally to attack and defence.
