Pokemon GO Fest Chicago sets records - and suspends play near Field Museum

A record-breaking 103,605 tickets sold and six surprise engagements couldn't hide the chaos: Niantic suspended GO Fest gameplay near Chicago's Field Museum for two full days.

Pokemon GO Fest Chicago 2026 wrapped up on Sunday, June 7 as the biggest live Pokemon GO event in North American history - but it also delivered a replay of the series' troubled past, with a major section of gameplay suspended mid-event due to crowd congestion and overlapping city events.

Record Attendance, Record Complications

The three-day Grant Park festival sold 90,000 tickets for the park experience and 103,605 total tickets - a record for a Pokemon GO live event in North America. More than 717,000 unique active players were counted across the city of Chicago from June 5-7.

The scale of the event, however, contributed directly to its biggest problem. Niantic and Chicago's local authorities scheduled the celebration to clash with at least four other events in the city, including a World Cup match. After physical congestion built up around the Field Museum and the Chicago Loop, along with connectivity problems, Niantic announced on its Support X account that it was pausing gameplay for the rest of Saturday, June 6.

Working in cooperation with local authorities, and citing "several overlapping events in the area," Niantic suspended Pokemon GO gameplay east of South Michigan Ave, from south of Grant Park to slightly south of East Cermak Rd. A follow-up blog post confirmed the "temporary" suspension would also continue throughout Sunday, June 7.

The suspension covered all Pokemon GO gameplay at the Field Museum, and the real-world GO Fest pop-up there was shut down for both days, though the Pokemon Fossil Museum exhibition itself remained open to visitors. All Pokemon GO Fest gameplay and experiences at Grant Park were not impacted.

As compensation, Niantic promised to complete all City Experience: Chicago Friendship District Timed Research for affected trainers and award anyone who played in Chicago across the weekend seven encounters with Excavator Pikachu.

Six Proposals and a Community Celebration

Away from the logistics drama, the Grant Park hub delivered one of the event's most talked-about moments. Six couples got engaged during GO Fest Chicago 2026 after being selected by the Pokemon GO team for surprise proposal experiences at Grant Park. Trainers had submitted their stories online for a chance to be selected for the special proposal experience. The chosen couples received VIP event badges, commemorative gifts, matching Umbreon and Espeon plushies, and surprise proposal setups that included a dedicated photographer and appearances from Pikachu and Eevee mascots.

The event marked Pokemon GO's fourth return to Chicago and celebrated the mobile game's ten-year anniversary, after its first in-person event debuted there in 2017. That original 2017 outing is remembered for all the wrong reasons - it was Niantic's first big real-world event and was plagued with issues, with many attendees unable to connect at all, others stuck in lines for hours, and tickets ultimately refunded to anyone who requested one.

What's Next: GO Fest Copenhagen and Global

GO Fest Chicago was the second of three in-person GO Fest events this year, with the first in Tokyo going off without incident the weekend before. The final in-person event heads to Copenhagen, Denmark, the following weekend. For those who missed Chicago entirely, the Pokemon GO team has confirmed that GO Fest Global will run July 11-12, giving players worldwide a chance to participate remotely.

Event Date Location Status
GO Fest Tokyo May 30 - Jun 1 Tokyo, Japan Completed
GO Fest Chicago Jun 5-7 Grant Park, Chicago Completed
GO Fest Copenhagen Jun 13-15 Copenhagen, Denmark Upcoming
GO Fest Global Jul 11-12 Worldwide (remote) Upcoming

The Chicago event ultimately tells two stories at once: a genuinely landmark community gathering that broke records and hosted surprise engagements, and a logistical stumble that cut off a significant gameplay zone for two consecutive days. Niantic's compensation offer - auto-completing research and a handful of Pikachu encounters - will feel thin to trainers who traveled to Chicago specifically for the Field Museum experience. Copenhagen will be the real test of whether lessons were learned.
