Just weeks after unveiling Guild Wars 3 at Summer Game Fest 2026, ArenaNet and parent company NC have announced yet another major franchise expansion. Mistbound is the first collectible card game set in the world of Guild Wars, licensed by ArenaNet, developed by NC, and published globally by Bilibili, targeting PC and mobile platforms.
This is not entirely out of the blue - a Guild Wars-themed digital CCG was quietly tested on Steam back in 2024, when it went by the name Lion's Arch Guild Wars Arena. That project has now officially emerged as Mistbound.
Why a Card Game?
ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson said the team "felt it was time to give Guild Wars fans a new way to play together, inspired by the card game roots of the franchise, where they could compete in a competitive PvP arena in a CCG game space." By "card game roots," Johanson is referring to the fact that Guild Wars was originally inspired by Magic: The Gathering, specifically in how character attributes can be modified to create bespoke builds.
The announcement is part of a broader push by ArenaNet and NC to expand the Guild Wars franchise, following the unveiling of Guild Wars 3 at Summer Game Fest 2026 and confirmation that development on Guild Wars Reforged and Guild Wars 2 will continue simultaneously.
The Dynamic Battlefield Twist
What sets Mistbound apart from standard digital CCGs is its approach to the battlefield. Players deploy cards onto a dynamic 5x3 tactical grid and crucially reposition them turn-by-turn in response to enemy movements. This feature is dubbed "Dynamic Movement Gameplay", and it allows each card to move in multiple directions per turn, ensuring no two games play out the same way.
The movement system introduces mechanics such as knockbacks, pulls, flanking opportunities, and shifting offense-defense positioning, adding strategic depth while remaining intuitive.
NC producer Hwang Sunwoo explained the design intent behind pushing complexity onto the board rather than individual cards:
"Rather than placing that complexity on individual cards, we wanted to express it through the battlefield. Our goal is to create a CCG that, over time, continues to offer more choices and gameplay possibilities."

Commanders, Professions, and Guild Wars DNA
Commanders are not passive support characters sitting in the backline - they actively join the fight as powerful playmakers capable of turning the tide of battle. Iconic Guild Wars characters will step onto the battlefield as commanders, each bringing unique abilities, traits, and tactical identity.
Drawing direct inspiration from Guild Wars 2's nine professions, the system preserves the franchise's signature combat styles while opening up new strategic combinations. By freely pairing commanders and professions, Mistbound aims to unlock rich tactical diversity.
Game designer Baek Hakjun - better known by his handle "Kranich," a former professional Hearthstone player and World Championship competitor - rounded out the dev team's pitch for accessibility alongside depth:
"At first, the game is approachable. Placing units on a battlefield and engaging in combat is intuitive, allowing new players to learn quickly. But as you continue playing, you begin focusing on the significance of every turn and every decision."
The announcement also confirmed full voice performances for the game's characters alongside a soundtrack featuring contributions from Guild Wars' original musicians, signalling that this is no stripped-back spin-off.

Release Date and Availability
The collaboration is still in the early stages of development, and no release date window has been announced. Mistbound is currently planned for PC and mobile, and it may debut in China first before expanding to other regions. Players can register interest for early tests on the official website.
For Guild Wars fans who have been deep in Tyria for years, Mistbound offers something the MMO never quite could: a fast, competitive session without the commitment of a full online world. Whether it can carve out real space in a crowded digital CCG market - against the likes of Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering Arena - will depend heavily on whether that dynamic grid delivers on its promise. The pedigree of a Hearthstone World Championship competitor on the design team is at least a credible reason to watch this one closely.
