What is Freedom Wars Remastered?
Freedom Wars is a 2014 action role-playing game developed by Dimps and originally published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation Vita. It was one of the most successful first-party PS Vita titles in Japan, achieving the second highest all-time opening sales for Vita software in the country.
Freedom Wars Remastered is a remastered version of the 2014 PS Vita action RPG that includes all previously released downloadable content. It launched on January 10, 2025, worldwide for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
When asked why Bandai Namco is publishing the remaster when Sony still owns the IP, original director Takashi Tsukamoto explained: "When we [Dimps] received the license from Sony Interactive Entertainment to create a remastered version and were looking for a publisher, Bandai Namco Entertainment kindly stepped forward and offered to publish."

What's new in the remaster?
Freedom Wars Remastered brings enhancements including 4K resolution, upgraded textures, and 60 fps on current-gen platforms. Other improvements include adjusted game balance, a new "Deadly Sinner" difficulty mode, high-resolution textures, and control customization, plus all previously released DLC and the option to choose English or Japanese audio.
Here is a quick breakdown of the key upgrades across platforms:
| Feature | PS5 | PS4 | Switch | PC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 4K | 1080p | 1080p max | 4K |
| Frame rate | 60 fps | 60 fps | 30 fps | 60 fps |
| Cross-buy | Yes (with PS4) | Yes (with PS5) | N/A | N/A |
| Physical release | Yes | No | Yes | No |
The game plays in a manner similar to Monster Hunter and God Eater, as it was released when games of the same genre were proliferating in Japan. It distinguishes itself with its Panopticon setting, where players must clear missions and rescue civilians to have their sentence years reduced.
Player reception and deal verdict
The remaster has landed well with PS Store users - according to PlayStation Lifestyle, it holds a rating of 4.25 out of 5 stars based on nearly 2,000 votes on the PS Store. At $15.99, this is its lowest recorded price since launch, making the July Savings window a strong entry point for anyone who missed the Vita original or who is returning after a decade away.
The deal is live now and expires July 15, 2026.
