BrokenLore: FOLLOW Review - A Sharper, More Confident Sequel

Serafini Productions' latest psychedelic horror sequel dives deeper into Anne's fractured psyche - and largely delivers a more polished, confident game.

BrokenLore: FOLLOW is the latest entry in indie developer Serafini Productions' ongoing psychedelic horror series, and it arrives as a direct follow-up to BrokenLore: UNFOLLOW. Developed and co-published by Serafini Productions alongside Soft Source, the game released on May 31, 2026. It is available on Windows PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. The verdict from critics is that this is a sequel that does not necessarily go bigger - but goes meaningfully better.

Anne's New Nightmare: The Mother

FOLLOW is a psychological first-person horror experience that follows Anne, a young woman haunted by her painful past, who wakes in her childhood home and begins encountering surreal manifestations of past memories. Guided by her seemingly sentient childhood doll, Anne is forced to confront her issues with self-acceptance, self-worth, and her challenging relationship with her mother.

Where UNFOLLOW centered on bullying and social media pressure, FOLLOW pivots to Anne's home life. GamingBolt's reviewer notes that Anne's mother is the central antagonist this time around, lurking in the darkest corners of Anne's mind and emerging whenever a key memory is uncovered. Each level carries a distinct theme and color palette tied to how Anne's psyche has processed her feelings toward her mother - an elegant structural choice that keeps the horror grounded in character rather than spectacle.

Through seven different chapters, Anne revisits key locations from her life and childhood, relives memories, and comes to terms with past mistakes and pains - all whilst being pursued by a terrifying entity that bears a striking resemblance to her mother.

Stronger Craft, Familiar Structure

Feature UNFOLLOW FOLLOW
Main antagonist School bullies / social media Anne's mother
Chase sequences Real-time 3D Side-scrolling bookends
Visual confidence Strong Improved lighting & themes
Combat None None
Protagonist agility Lower Increased

The review at GamingBolt praises the game's audio design as a particular highlight, noting that the soundtrack balances silence and sinister build-up with precision. Voice acting is also called out for surfacing subtle, unspoken emotions - a vital element in a story built around the nuances of a parent-child relationship.

A standout new addition is Little Annie, a childhood doll described by GamingBolt as "a truly unsettling doll that represents Anne's youthful innocence," whose adorable voice creates an effective contrast with the horror around her. She also doubles as a practical navigation aid, signalling when something important is nearby.

Each chapter of FOLLOW uses a distinct color palette to represent Anne's emotional state toward her mother.

Anne herself is noted to be more agile in this entry, making traversal smoother. The 3D chase sequences from UNFOLLOW have been replaced with optional side-scrolling segments at the end of each chapter - skippable if players find the tight timing windows frustrating.

Where It Stumbles

The main criticism levelled at FOLLOW is its puzzle design. GamingBolt's reviewer found that progression often involves running through a level looking for interactable objects, with little signposting connecting the clues players find to the actual solution required. There is no combat - survival depends on hiding, running, and piecing together Anne's fractured memories - which means the pacing lives or dies on those puzzles. When they feel disconnected, momentum stalls.

That said, the reviewer found no significant performance issues on PS5, citing only minor frame drops. On Steam, early user reviews sit at Very Positive, with 81% of 127 reviews positive at time of writing - a step up from UNFOLLOW's "Mostly Positive" rating.

Should You Play It?

BrokenLore: FOLLOW is recommended by GamingBolt for fans of slow-burn psychological horror who value story and atmosphere over action. Those expecting combat or a more directed puzzle experience may find it frustrating. But for players who responded to UNFOLLOW's examination of trauma, this sequel delivers a more polished, visually refined and thematically sharper experience.

Serafini Productions is a small team based in Tokyo, and FOLLOW demonstrates that they are refining their craft with each release. If the studio can tighten up their puzzle communication in a future entry, the BrokenLore series has the foundations to become a genuinely important voice in indie horror.
